The most common question we hear is simple: does insurance cover detox? For most PPO plans that include behavioral health benefits, the answer is yes, at least in part.

Understanding out-of-network benefits

1st Choice Detox Treatment Center is an out-of-network provider. That means we do not hold a contract with your insurance company, and we bill your plan’s out-of-network benefits instead. For many people this sounds like bad news, but PPO plans with behavioral health coverage often reimburse out-of-network detox and residential treatment at meaningful levels.

PPO detox coverage varies widely from one policy to the next, even between two people who carry the same insurance card.
You can verify your insurance before making any decision about treatment. When you verify your insurance with us, we explain your out-of-pocket cost before you admit.

What you actually pay depends on three numbers in your policy. Your out-of-network deductible is the amount you pay before your plan begins contributing. Your coinsurance is the percentage you are responsible for after that deductible is met. Your out-of-network maximum is the ceiling on what you can be required to pay in a plan year, after which your insurer covers the rest.

Because those numbers vary widely from policy to policy, the only way to know your real cost is to verify. Our admissions team contacts your insurer, confirms which levels of care are authorized and for how many days, and explains exactly what you would owe before you admit. You will not learn your financial responsibility after treatment has already started.

We work with PPO plans that include behavioral health benefits. We do not accept HMO plans, Medicaid, or Medi-Cal. Under federal mental health parity law, insurers that cover medical care must cover behavioral health treatment comparably.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Insurance Verification & Admissions

What happens when I first contact you?

The first thing we do is talk. Before any paperwork, an admissions specialist will ask what you have been using and for how long, whether you have been through detox before, what your living situation looks like, and where you are calling from. That conversation tells us whether medical detox is the right level of care for you, and whether our program is genuinely a good fit for your situation. Insurance verification comes after that, once we both understand what you actually need.

Once we have talked through your situation, verification itself is simple. We need your name, date of birth, a phone number or email, and the name of your insurance carrier. If you have your card handy, the member ID and group number help us move faster, but they are not required to start. Our admissions team contacts your insurer directly from there.

Most verifications are completed within 15 to 60 minutes during business hours, and same or next day outside of them. Our team contacts your insurer directly rather than relying on an automated lookup, then explains what your plan covers: which levels of care are authorized, how many days, your deductible, and any coinsurance you would be responsible for.

Then we will tell you. Not everyone who calls needs medical detox, and not every situation is one our program is built for. If your clinical needs fall outside what we provide, or if a different level of care or setting would serve you better, we will say so and point you toward appropriate resources. We would rather help you find the right place than admit someone we cannot genuinely help.
Yes. Parents, spouses, and adult children call on behalf of a loved one every day, and we will walk through the same questions with you: what they have been using, how long, and what their situation looks like. You can provide their basic information to start a benefits check, though your loved one will need to take part in the clinical assessment and consent to treatment themselves. If you are unsure how to approach that conversation, we can help you think it through.
We work with PPO insurance plans that include behavioral health benefits. The carrier logos on this page are examples of plans we have worked with, not a complete list, and what is covered depends on your specific policy rather than the carrier alone. We do not accept HMO plans, Medicaid, or Medi-Cal. The only way to know what your plan covers is to verify, which is free and takes a few minutes.

Are you in-network with my insurance?

We are an out-of-network provider and bill your plan’s out-of-network benefits. Many PPO policies include meaningful out-of-network coverage for medical detox and residential treatment, but what your plan pays and what you owe depends on your deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-network maximum. Our admissions team confirms all of that with your insurer before you admit, so you know your expected cost in advance rather than finding out afterward.
Yes. Your information is protected under HIPAA and under 42 CFR Part 2, the stricter federal regulation governing substance use disorder records specifically. We do not disclose that you contacted us or received treatment without your written authorization. Communication with your insurer is limited to what is necessary to determine coverage and bill for care.
Coverage varies by plan. Most PPO policies with behavioral health benefits authorize medical detox for the days that are medically necessary, commonly five to ten days, followed by residential treatment for the remainder of a roughly 30-day program. Insurers authorize care in increments and review continued medical necessity as you progress. Because we bill out-of-network benefits, your share depends on your deductible and coinsurance, and our team will walk you through those numbers before you admit.
If your insurer denies authorization or approves fewer days than your clinical team believes is necessary, we appeal on your behalf. Our team submits the clinical documentation supporting continued medical necessity and works directly with the insurer’s utilization review process. Appeals are not always successful. If coverage cannot be secured, we will be straightforward with you about private pay options or help you identify another provider that fits your situation.
Our admissions line is staffed 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. If your situation is urgent, calling (844) 944-3139 is the fastest path, since we can talk through your situation and verify benefits on the same call. Whether we can admit the same night depends on bed availability and the outcome of your clinical assessment. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.
